EDDY - James Henry, Jr., age
86, better known as Jim "Steady" Eddy to his friends and associates,
died Sunday, February 9, 2003 after a long fight against cancer. Jim was
born in Elizabeth, NJ and lived in Wyckoff, NJ for the past 52 years. He
graduated from Duke University (Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity) in 1941 with
a BS in mechanical engineering and started as an apprentice service engineer
with Foster Wheeler in Dansville, NY. He moved up from junior engineer in
the Service Department to manager of the Repair Order Department and finally
into a Consulting position in Livingston before retiring in 1983 after 42
years. During the war years he worked with his company on critical industries
for war production including the "Manhattan Project" and was therefore
exempted from the service. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in the
state of NJ, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and
an active member of the Corrosion Committee for both the Boiler Industry
and the Petroleum Industry.
Jim was the kind of man who makes you feel blessed to have made his acquaintance.
Reliable, loyal, affectionate, intellectual, and always in good humor,
Jim is well known for his outstanding volunteer efforts in Boy Scouting,
the Benevolent Order of the Elks, and in and around his community. Jim's
adult scouting career began in 1955 when he was asked to take over Pack
198. He went on to lead Troop 89 in Wyckoff, where he has "hung his
hat" for nearly 50 years. He was instrumental in the revival and
reorganization of Explorer Post 189 and has been a Merit Badge Counselor
for Cooking (his first love), Life-Saving, Atomic Energy, Photography
and Camping. Over the years he earned the Scouter's Award, Wood Badge,
Scoutmaster's Key, the Arrowhead Award, District Award of Merit, Commissioner's
Key, Distinguished Commissioner's Award, the Order of the Arrow Founder's
Award, and the Silver Beaver. He helped plan five Jamborees and attended
eight from 1964 to 2001.
He traveled extensively, visiting Europe and 49 of the 50 states. He
had planned to complete this list by traveling to Alaska on a cruise,
but was unable to accomplish this mission. In addition to his scouting
activities, "Steady" was also active with the BPOE Paramus Lodge
#2001, where he offered his culinary talents on a regular basis and could
be considered the "Lodge Photographer" for most of their events
and activities. Jim also managed to find time to volunteer in his community.
He worked part time as a receptionist at the YMCA, was a member of Wyckoff's
Memorial Day Parade Committee, and was active with Partners in Pride,
the Wyckoff Senior Citizens and the Activities Unlimited group. He was
involved in beginning the Recycling Center in Wyckoff.
Contributions may be made to the Red Jacket Endowment, 13 Maple Street,
Waldwick, NJ 07481. These funds are to begin an endowment in Jim's and
other departed Scouters names to benefit local northern NJ Scouting programs.
